Green Button Ontario

New Sub–Working Groups established at OEB IWG

February 28, 2022

The Ontario Energy Board’s Industry-Led Working Group (OEB IWG) has taken a significant step forward in advancing the Green Button initiative in the province. Three new sub-working groups have been established to tackle key areas and expedite progress. These focused teams will operate concurrently, ensuring comprehensive and efficient progress towards a robust Green Button implementation.

Focused Sub-Working Groups Drive Green Button Progress:

  • Technical (ITWG) Sub-Working Group: This team focuses on the technical aspects of Green Button implementation. They’ll delve into data standards, security protocols, and API development, ensuring seamless data exchange between utilities and third-party providers.
  • User Experience (IUXWG) Sub-Working Group: Understanding user needs is paramount. This sub-group will prioritize designing a user-friendly experience for consumers accessing their energy data through Green Button. They’ll focus on intuitive interfaces and clear data visualization, empowering consumers to make informed energy decisions.
  • Utility-Only (IUWG) Sub-Working Group: Collaboration across utilities is essential. This specialized group fosters communication and alignment among utilities regarding Green Button implementation. They’ll address specific utility concerns and ensure a standardized approach across the province.

Regular Meetings and Progress Updates:

All sub-working groups will convene regularly to discuss progress, address challenges, and refine their strategies. They’ll present their findings and recommendations to the broader IWG, ensuring transparency and collaboration throughout the process. The anticipated duration for these sub-working groups is at least three weeks.

Benefits of Streamlined Green Button Implementation:

By establishing focused sub-working groups, the OEB IWG aims to accelerate the Green Button initiative in Ontario. This approach offers several key benefits:

  • Enhanced Efficiency: Focused teams can delve deeper into specific areas, leading to quicker and more efficient progress.
  • Improved Expertise: Each sub-group leverages specialized skills, ensuring a comprehensive and technically sound implementation.
  • Streamlined Communication: Regular meetings keep all stakeholders informed and facilitate collaborative decision-making.
  • Faster Consumer Benefits: A quicker implementation timeline translates to earlier access for consumers to their energy data, empowering them to make informed choices and manage consumption more effectively.

This targeted approach by the OEB IWG demonstrates their commitment to a smooth and efficient Green Button rollout in Ontario. With dedicated sub-working groups addressing key areas, consumers and the energy industry can expect to see significant progress in the coming weeks.

All groups will be meeting regularly and be presenting to the IWG on progress.  These working groups are intended to be active for at least the next 3 weeks.
